TRAVEL MOBILITY REVIEW · FIELD TEST

After a $140 roaming bill in Europe, I tried Unpack eSIM on my next trip. Here’s what actually happened.

I was sure a digital travel SIM would be too technical, wipe my contacts or cancel my US plan. Here’s my honest experience setting it up on an iPhone before landing in London.

PREVIOUS BILL SHOCK
Came home from Italy to a $149.80 charge for spotty data that kept dropping.

I thought “eSIM” meant opening my phone. It’s a 45-second app install, and my number stayed on.

The 6:15 AM touchdown
The wheels hit the rainy tarmac at Heathrow at 6:15 AM after an eight-hour flight from New York. You know the drill: barely slept, stiff neck, blinding cabin lights, and fifty people standing before the seatbelt sign dings.
My first reflex, like everyone’s: pull out the phone and switch off Airplane Mode.
Searching… No Service
Then the buzz. A text from my US carrier:
US carrier
“Welcome to the United Kingdom! Your International Day Pass is active. You will be charged $12.00 today. Each additional 24- hour period is $12.00.”

The curbside breakdown
On past trips I’d have just paid it. $12 a day sounds fine when you’re tired, until you realize 10 days adds $120 to your bill. For my partner and me, $240 to use phones we already own.
And many passes slow you down after a daily high- speed allowance. Load a map and a few photos, and the rest of the day crawls.
So this time I had a plan: “I’ll use airport Wi-Fi, then grab an Uber.”
Rookie mistake.
The Wi-Fi worked by baggage claim. The moment I rolled through the sliding doors to the pickup curb, in the morning drizzle, it dropped to zero.
My ride app couldn’t find my driver.
My Airbnb host’s lockbox code was stuck in WhatsApp.
No address, no train map.
Just me, my bags, and a curb full of travelers staring at frozen screens.

The airport SIM kiosk trap
Back inside, there was a bright SIM kiosk with a line of thirty exhausted tourists. The board read: “Tourist UK SIM: £35 ($45) for 15 GB.” Passport check, paperwork, and a paperclip to pop out my US SIM.
Lose that tiny chip, and your bank codes and two-factor texts stop for the rest of the trip.
I was about to hand over my passport when the traveler behind me, clearly someone who flies every week, tapped my shoulder.
Don’t wait in that line. Your phone already has an eSIM built in. Download Unpack on the terminal Wi-Fi. It takes 60 seconds and costs a buck.

What an eSIM actually is (in 30 seconds)
I’d always assumed “eSIM” was something for IT people. He explained it in plain English:
No plastic chip:
iPhones since late 2018 (XS or newer) and most recent Galaxy and Pixel phones have a eSIM built in.
Two lines at once:
Your US SIM stays put, so calls and texts still reach your number.
Unpack just handles data:
Unpack only handles data. Its eSIM connects you to local networks, so you skip carrier roaming. Just keep Data Roaming off on your home line.

The 60-second setup
I stepped out of the line, got back on terminal Wi-Fi and opened the App Store.
1- Downloaded Unpack
30 sec
Clean and simple. No forms, no passport scan, no credit check.
2- Picked the UK and claimed the welcome offer
15 sec
1 GB for $1. Paid with Apple Pay.
3- Installed with one tap
15 sec
An iOS “Activate eSIM” prompt appeared. I tapped Continue. Done.
Back out through the sliding doors. Data switched to the new line. Airplane Mode off.

WhatsApp buzzed with the lockbox code. My ride app found my pickup spot and a driver three minutes away. I was connected before most of that kiosk line reached the counter.

The rest of the trip
For ten days in London and Edinburgh, I never thought about connectivity once:
Maps for hours a day on the Tube andcobblestones.
Rides and trains booked on the go.
Photos and work email without a dropped connection.
Bank codes arrived on my US number, since my main line stayed on.
When my 1 GB ran low after four busy days, the app nudged me. I added 6 GB for $12 and kept moving.
